This is directed at boydie more than anyone but any input would be apppreciated. My laptop died I've lost all my pictures from biking (not a big deal coz they're all on here), and my music, which i can just nab off my friends. More gutting is i've lost about 4GB of photos, spanning 2 ski trips, sailing, and 2 years of university. It's with a guy in selby who does data recovery but he says it's not looking hopeful..... I did manage to get a few files off using linux but my "my pictures" folder only said it had 192MB of data, not the 4Gig i was expecting. I dont know if anyone knows of a data recovery company who actually can recover direct from the hard disk platter, rather than relying on the whole of the hard disk, because the memories in these photos really are priceless. Thanks

direct from disk.... ohhhh very very expensive, even more so for laptop drives, or it was when i looked into it for work. If its the drive hardware (circuit/pcb) One slightly crazy option is you do it yourself, you need to find a hdd of the same make and size if possible in the same ball park in serial number too. Then sacrifice it opening it up and placing the old drive spinning bits into it. been careful not to damage reading heads.. or other way around, remove circuit and swap with new.

yeah was thinking about doing that but a) i'll lose my warranty, and b) how likely am i to find an identical(ish) hard disk?
i want my photos back but i dunno how much!
